Who doesn’t love those photos of bridesmaids all getting ready in cute robes? Now they’re available everywhere, Etsy and of course the gorgeous selections from Pretty Plum Sugar are just lovely. But a lot of these are pretty costly when you’re trying to stick to your wedding budget and some of the online reviews weren’t so promising.
I started hunting early and after a lot of fails I finally struck the jackpot. Here’s where I looked:
After working at La Senza for several years I knew what the robes there were like. I didn’t want a faux-satin looking selection for a cozy morning getting ready at the barn. The best time to pick up these robes are during Semi Annual Sale or Black Friday (use the email coupons they give plus your Prestige card and you can get them for a great price). If you’re looking for a Victoria Secret-ish look for less La Senza is a great start, but colour selection changes seasonally, they typically always have black and add another colour once a season. They’ve started to sell more shapes than the typical Kimono when I worked there, but those were very popular too.
If you live in a more rural area it’s probably harder to get to a VS store but now most major cities have them in Canada. As an avid fan of the VS Fashion show I knew I had to check here, but again the results were mostly more expensive versions of the La Senza robes with a similar satin look. Pretty for a gift, but not what I had in mind for my bridesmaids. Again, the best time to get these robes for less are during the Semi Annual Sale or Black Friday. Watch for coupons and you’ll have better luck if you shop early and aren’t too determined to have a consistent colour selection. Staple styles (black, the VS pink, white) may not be included in clearance sales so store-wide sales might be your better option.
As the only plus size member of the bridal party (holla!) I thought I’d take a peek here for a robe for myself. They had lots of pretty options (I did cave and buy quite a bit of the Ashley Graham lingerie for under my wedding dress and for the honeymoon) but I wanted us all to have the same look. Because certain stores can have a different selection I would recommend looking online and using the “find in store” feature so you don’t drive to another location only to find items not there. Addition Elle offers excellent sales throughout the year, many being communicated via email. In-store offers are also common as are their fashion cash, so make sure to put those in a safe place!
The one thing I love about La Vie en Rose is the selection: from sexy styles to comfy classics, these stores don’t just stick to one look every season. Living in Toronto, I’m lucky to have quite a few outlets nearby where I’ve often found excellent deals like $50 nightgowns for $9 bucks. So I started scouring the outlets and online in the winter. I kept finding things I liked, but didn’t really love. Personally one of my favourite fabrics for sleepwear is modal cotton, it’s so soft with a romantic drape and washes really well. My sister in law also has a love for modal so I knew this might be the perfect fabric and La Vie en Rose had multiple options. I had almost settled on black robes with little pink flowers but decided to wait, and boy am I glad I did.
Ever hear of a buy 1 get 2 free sale? I hadn’t until I got a lovely email in my inbox. I went to the homepage and what did I see? New product! With a model wearing what looked like a robe in my wedding colours.
With 5 bridesmaids, plus myself, I ended up paying for two robes and getting the rest free plus free shipping. They were beautifully soft, matched the bridesmaid dresses nicely and were nice and cool on the hot June day of the wedding. Best of all they were so comfortable. All of my bridesmaids said they would definitely use theirs all the time and remember how much fun we had all together.
My subtotal before the sale was $499.50 and in total I paid $112.89. The robes came in a couple days beautifully packaged and ready for me to wrap for my girls. While I don’t typically buy my bras here, I buy most of my pjs here and the XL robe had plenty of stretch for me to feel comfortable. Most of us had pjs on under our robes anyway so while we were setting up we wouldn’t terrify any of the strawberry pickers at the farm should one of our robes slip open.
While the colour thing was an absolute fluke, subscribing to emails and starting to shop around early will help. Subscribe to store emails, watch websites like smartcanuk, and keep checking for a good deal, and if you see one pounce so all the sizes you need will be available.
As much as I love buying from independent stores and boutiques, with my budget this wasn’t an option for this particular purchase. I have always had excellent experiences shopping at La Vie en Rose and after such a effortless purchase I went back to pick up plenty of items for our honeymoon.
